Is Your Website Ready for What’s Next?

Why August is the perfect time for a website audit.

August is an interesting month. It marks the beginning of the “ber months,” and even though summer isn’t over yet, it’s when we begin planning for the last few months of the year. That’s also why we encourage our clients to pause before moving forward with new marketing efforts and take a closer look at their online presence.

There’s a reason we start there. Every marketing initiative eventually leads people back to your website. That’s why we prefer to review it before recommending new campaigns or building a strategy for the months ahead. It gives us the opportunity to identify anything that deserves attention before those plans move forward.

If improvements are needed, every new initiative begins with a disadvantage. Addressing those issues before fall gives us a much clearer starting point and helps ensure the strategy is supported by a site that’s ready to do its job.

What Does a Website Audit Include?

When we audit a website, we’re not looking for reasons to redesign it. Our goal is to evaluate how well it’s supporting the business and identify the areas that could influence future marketing performance. Some findings are technical, others are strategic, but together they give us a much clearer understanding of where the website stands today.

During every audit, we review:

  • Website performance, including page speed, mobile responsiveness, and technical issues that may affect usability.
  • Navigation and user flow, making sure visitors can easily find the information they’re looking for and move naturally through the site.
  • Content quality, identifying outdated information, inconsistent messaging, and pages that no longer reflect the business as it is today.
  • Conversion paths, reviewing calls to action, contact forms, and the steps visitors take before reaching out.
  • Accessibility, evaluating the website against current WCAG guidelines to identify barriers that could affect usability or compliance.
  • Visual design, ensuring the website reflects the brand, builds credibility, and supports the overall user experience.

The purpose of the audit is to identify what deserves attention first, what can wait, and where a few well-planned improvements can make the biggest difference.

Where Good Websites Make the Difference

Bringing visitors to a website is only part of the job. Once they arrive, the website needs to help them understand what your business offers, answer the questions they’re likely to have, and make it easy to take the next step. If that isn’t happening, attracting more visitors won’t necessarily lead to better results.

According to Contentsquare’s 2026 Digital Experience Benchmark Report, the average website converts only 2.35% of its visitors. In other words, most people leave without making a purchase, completing a form, requesting more information, or taking any meaningful action.

That doesn’t automatically mean something is wrong with the website, but it does make conversion an important part of every audit.

Conversion is one of the most important areas we evaluate during a website audit. Looking beyond visitor numbers helps us understand how people are interacting with the site after they arrive.

  • Are they finding the information they need?
  • Are they moving naturally from one page to the next?
  • Are they reaching the pages that matter most, or leaving before they get there?

Reviewing that behaviour helps us identify where the website is supporting the business and where it may be creating obstacles that aren’t immediately obvious.

Accessibility Is Part of Every Website Audit

A complete website audit also includes accessibility. We evaluate it alongside performance, navigation, content, and conversion because each of these areas influences the overall experience someone has when they visit a website. Looking at them together helps us understand how they interact and where improvements will have the greatest impact.

We identify accessibility issues, prioritize them alongside the rest of our findings, and include those recommendations in the overall improvement plan. That allows clients to address accessibility as part of their ongoing website improvements rather than treating it as a separate initiative later on.

A website audit gives us a clear picture of where the website stands, but that’s only the first step. Once the audit is complete, we step back and look at the findings as a whole to determine what will have the greatest impact on the business.

For some clients, that means making improvements to their site before anything else. Others are in a good position to focus on SEO, refresh their messaging, strengthen their brand, or begin a broader digital marketing strategy. Sometimes the audit confirms that the website is already doing its job well, allowing us to move forward with the strategy we’ve developed together.

Our recommendations are never based on a standard checklist. They’re based on what the business needs, what will best support its goals, and where our work can make the biggest difference.

Why We Do This Every August

August gives us the opportunity to step back before the busiest part of the year begins. Reviewing your website now makes it easier to identify what deserves attention, make thoughtful improvements, and prepare for the marketing initiatives you’re planning in the months ahead.

A website audit doesn’t always lead to a complete redesign or major changes. Sometimes it confirms that everything is working as it should. Other times, it uncovers opportunities to improve performance, strengthen your messaging, or better align your website with your business goals. Either way, you’ll have a clearer understanding of where to focus your time, budget, and future marketing efforts.

If you’re planning for the months ahead and aren’t sure if your website is ready to support those efforts, we’d be happy to take a closer look. A website audit gives you the clarity to understand what’s working, what deserves attention, and where your next investment can make the greatest impact.
